How does the model move from one pixel to the next?

The cellular automata model processes test pixels one by one. After finishing the rule check for one pixel, it advances to the next pixel and repeats the same threshold evaluation across the other raster datasets.

Conditions

  • Processing is sequential over pixels in the main raster.
  • The same transition-rule procedure is applied to each test pixel.

Reasoning, step by step

  1. Complete the threshold evaluation for the current test pixel.
  2. Advance the kernel or focus to the next test pixel in the main raster.
  3. Repeat the same threshold check procedure for the new pixel.
  4. Continue this sequential scanning until all pixels are processed.

Example

The speaker says the model moves ahead with step two, does the same thing for the second pixel with value two in the main raster, then goes for the next pixel and the next pixel and so on. The animation shows the highlighted target cell shifting across the main raster while the Step label changes from Step 1 to Step 4.

Common misconceptions

  • Assuming the model calculates all pixels simultaneously. The demonstration explicitly shows sequential, pixel-by-pixel processing.
