What is the likelihood function L(θ∣x1,…,xn)L(\theta \mid x_1, \dots, x_n) as introduced in the lecture?

The likelihood function is a function of the unknown parameter θ\theta after the observed data x1,…,xnx_1, \dots, x_n are fixed. It assigns to each candidate parameter value a measure of how likely the observed data are under that parameter.

Conditions

  • The data x1,…,xnx_1, \dots, x_n are treated as fixed observed constants.
  • The argument being varied is the parameter θ\theta.

Reasoning, step by step

  1. Start with an unknown parameter θ\theta.
  2. Collect a random sample X1,…,XnX_1, \dots, X_n from the model distribution f(x∣θ)f(x \mid \theta).
  3. After observation, treat the realized data values x1,…,xnx_1, \dots, x_n as constants.
  4. Define the likelihood function L(θ∣x1,…,xn)L(\theta \mid x_1, \dots, x_n) by conditioning on the fixed data.
  5. Evaluate L(θ∣x1,…,xn)L(\theta \mid x_1, \dots, x_n) for different candidate values of θ\theta to see which makes the data most plausible.

Example

The lecturer writes the heading "Likelihood function" and the formula L(θ∣x1,...,xn)L(\theta | x_1, ..., x_n), explaining that it is "a function of our parameter given the data that we've observed."

Common misconceptions

  • Treating the likelihood as a probability distribution over the parameter θ\theta rather than a function of θ\theta given fixed data.
  • Continuing to treat the observed data x1,…,xnx_1, \dots, x_n as random variables during the likelihood evaluation stage.
