A Sturm-Liouville problem is an eigenvalue problem of the form Ly=λyL y = \lambda y on an interval a<x<ba < x < b, together with homogeneous linear boundary conditions at the endpoints: α1y(a)+α2y′(a)=0\alpha_1 y(a) + \alpha_2 y'(a) = 0 and β1y(b)+β2y′(b)=0\beta_1 y(b) + \beta_2 y'(b) = 0. The coefficients at each endpoint cannot both be zero.

Conditions: The equation is posed on an interval a<x<ba < x < b.; Boundary conditions are homogeneous linear combinations of yy and y′y' at x=ax=a and x=bx=b.; At each endpoint, the pair of boundary coefficients is not both zero.

A Sturm-Liouville problem is regular exactly when its domain is the finite closed interval X=[a,b]X=[a,b] and the coefficient pp does not vanish anywhere on XX (p(x)≠0p(x) \neq 0 for all x∈Xx \in X). A problem is singular when either the domain XX is infinite/unbounded or the coefficient pp vanishes at some point x0x_0 in XX.

Conditions: Regular: X=[a,b]X=[a,b] and p(x)≠0p(x) \neq 0 for all x∈Xx \in X.; Singular: XX is infinite, or p(x0)=0p(x_0)=0 for some x0∈Xx_0 \in X.; For unbounded XX, boundary conditions are interpreted using limits.

The Sturm-Liouville operator is the second-order differential expression Ly=(py′)′+qyL y = (p y')' + q y. The coefficient function pp must be continuously differentiable, meaning p∈C1(X)p \in C^1(X), and the coefficient function qq must be continuous, meaning q∈C(X)q \in C(X).

Conditions: The operator acts on a function yy.; pp must be continuously differentiable.; qq must be continuous.
